Exporting your data (and why exports are not encrypted)

Varuno gives you two ways to get your data out, both under Settings → Data:

  • Export Data — a portable copy of your records (CSV/JSON) for use elsewhere.
  • Create Backup — a restorable .varuno.json file containing everything, up to 64 MB.

Both use the system save dialog, so you choose exactly where the file goes.

The warning the app shows, quoted in full

This file is not encrypted. Your passcode and Face ID do not protect it — anyone who opens it can read your full financial history, including salary and employer. Save it somewhere you trust.

The export is readable JSON, and the app says so up front. The encryption that protects the database on your device does not travel with the file.

Practical guidance

  • Save backups to storage you control and trust, and delete copies you no longer need.
  • Never attach a backup file to a support request — support will never ask for one, and the form warnings say so.
  • Before a destructive restore, Varuno automatically takes a recovery snapshot and keeps the last three on-device, so a bad restore is recoverable — see Restoring a backup.

If an export fails

If no file appears, the most common causes are cancelling the system dialog or a storage issue at the destination. Try again, or try a different destination. If it fails reproducibly, report it with your app version.
